Chapter Ten

Quentin brings us to the interrogation room where Emilio is waiting. I’m not entirely surprised that Emilio has a lawyer with him.

“I’m Darby Cruz, Mr. Nash’s lawyer.” She shakes all our hands as we introduce ourselves in turn. “Mr. Nash saw fit to call me after his audition. I would like it to be known that Mr. Nash has been experiencing some discomfort in his vocal chords. He has not sought medical treatment, though. He felt doing so would get him dismissed from his contract, so he’s been operating under the assumption that he has vocal nodules and has been treating them accordingly on his own.”

“So you never went to a doctor for a diagnosis?” Quentin confirms.

Emilio shakes his head.

“But you can in fact speak?” Quentin continues.

Emilio nods.

“My client prefers to not use his vocal chords unless absolutely necessary.”

“Why was the audition necessary then if you wanted to leave the band?” I ask. “I’d think you’d opt for the surgery to get you out of your contract.”

“My client never said he intended to leave Fifteen Minutes of Fame,” Ms. Cruz says.

“But you do, don’t you?” I ask, keeping my eyes on Emilio.

“I don’t see how that’s relevant. Mr. Nash, you don’t have to answer that.” Ms. Cruz places her hand flat on the table in front of Emilio.

“Wanting to leave the band could actually help Emilio’s case,” I say. “I mean, he’d have no reason to want to harm Zeke Taylor if he didn’t plan to stay in Fifteen Minutes of Fame.” Of course, after Emilio’s audition, I’m not sure that’s what’s going on.

“I wanted to leave,” Emilio says, his voice sounding just fine.

“Then why did you audition?” I ask.

“As I stated, my client was contractually obligated to.” Ms. Cruz is speaking slowly as if we can’t keep up.

“But Josie gave you the out to only sing a few notes. Why did you keep going?” I don’t want to believe Emilio isn’t the nice guy I thought he was, but his actions at the audition don’t make any sense.

“I was tired of it. Of all of them. Heath and Landon are no different than Zeke.”

Sure, they are. They don’t have a wealthy uncle to pull strings for them.

“I sing and do what I’m told, and I’m treated terribly.”

“By whom?” Quentin asks.

“All of them. Heath, Zeke, Landon, Hunter.”

“Hunter Benson?” I ask. “But he’s not your manager. Josie is, and she seems like she’s nice to you.”

“She is, but everyone knows she cowers to Benson. She does everything he says.”

Because Eppes is playing puppet master and controlling things without anyone else knowing. He’s making it look like Benson is in charge when he’s not. Benson is only doing what he’s told.

“Like you, I don’t think she has much of a choice,” I say. “She’s going to lose her job. She figured that out after the scandal with Zeke.”

“Do you think she killed him?” Emilio asks, looking directly at me.

“I don’t know who killed him. I was hoping you could help us there.
